9 hours of daylight to 18

Long flights suck. There's no way to make them fun, an empty seat next to me at least made it bearable. I had big plans on how to survive my stopover in LA, involving sleep, that failed miserably.

My arrival in LA was surprisingly painless. Immigration saw my visa and were a bit puzzled, but figured I'd already been asked all the normal questions. Rechecking my baggage was even easier. Walking out of an airport was a slightly strange experience, especially when it was so vehicle focused.

Venice Beach was an interesting place to spend a few hours. Lots of people out enjoying the sun, although it seemed like it was mandatory to be fit already. I even got to see one woman being arrested...

Wandering along the boardwalk killed a bunch of time and sunset over Santa Monica Pier was worth hanging around for. Still plenty of things to see when I'm back in October.

Arriving in Anchorage at 4.30am could have been a very painful experience, especially after little sleep since leaving Melbourne. So it was amazing that I had Amy, a friend of a friend waiting for me, even taking me to a diner for breakfast, a good preparation for the state of coffee to come...

Later on I rocked up to my Warmshowers hosts, a couch surfing for cyclists. I'd heard good things about it, but until I met Jim and Burnice I was a little nervous. I don't think I would have felt anywhere near as prepared to head out if I hadn't met them. In fact the hospitality was so good that leaving was hard. The highlight was a BBQ with half the neighbourhood.

Jim mentioned that Emelio, a Mexican cyclist was heading out of town the same day as me, so we made plans to meet up the next morning and roll out together.
